A59 – Blubberhouses closure update

Latest news from North Yorkshire County Council regarding the ongoing closure of the A59.

A temporary drainage solution is to be installed within the slope above Kex Gill to allow the road to be reopened safely. It is envisaged that the closure will remain in place until the end of Feb 2016. The ongoing diversions through Pool/ Otley/Ilkley will continue until then.

Meanwhile, a lone walker takes advantage of an empty road.

  1. It would be interesting to know how long the NYCC have known about impending stability problems at Blubberhouses and procrastinated with regard to any action. I note that a new road line through the problem area is included in the NYCC Draft Transport Plan. This is long overdue to address the problems on what is a major route for both private and commercial traffic, but I bet by the time the final version of the plan is produced, the new road proposal could well have been withdrawn because of funding issues. After all, this is the North of England where the Government believe sheep are the mainstay of the economy.
